Dr. Sumayah Jamal: Rosacea

September 16, 2012

As a practicing dermatologist, Dr. Sumayah Jamal owns and operates Keris Dermatology in New York City. In her practice, Dr. Jamal helps patients manage a number of medical and cosmetic skin conditions, including rosacea.

Also known as adult acne, rosacea appears as redness and spider-like veins on the face. People with rosacea may also present with a red, bulbous nose and acne-like sores. This chronic skin condition is not dangerous, but many adults with rosacea seek treatment in order to improve their appearance.

While there is no cure for the condition, people with rosacea can learn to identify triggers that cause it to flare up, such as sun exposure, stress, alcohol intake, spicy foods, and certain medications. Avoidance of triggers is key to managing the condition. Certain dermatological treatments may help reduce redness, as well, including oral medication, topical applications, and laser or light therapy. Adults wishing to reduce redness and outbreaks associated with rosacea should consult their doctor to determine the best course of treatment.
